Breast cancer month overshadowed by 'pinkwashing'

Angela Mulholland | CTV.ca News | October 9, 2010

Every October, stores become a sea of pink as shelves fill with products adorned with pink ribbons or altogether repackaged in pink, as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It's all seen as a feel-good win-win: Consumers get the products they want while helping out a great cause. What could be wrong?

Lots, say groups and breast cancer patients who are sick of companies trying to push shoppers into thinking that pink candies, pink toasters and pink spatulas will make a dent in curing cancer.

It's bad enough, they say, that corporations are profiting off the pink ribbon – and the disease that left them feeling anything but pink. It's worse when companies "pinkwash": hitching a ride on the pink ribbon bandwagon to sell products actually linked to cancer.

In 2002, the Breast Cancer Action advocacy group launched the "Think Before You Pink" campaign, warning shoppers to ask questions about what their money is funding.

They successfully went after pink-ribbon sponsor Yoplait, and later Dannon, for using milk from cows treated with bovine growth hormone (rBGH), a hormone that's been linked in some studies to breast cancer. Both companies later bowed to consumer demands and stopped using milk with the hormone.

This year, the Think Before You Pink campaign is targeting alcohol companies that urge people to "pink their drink" because, they say, these drinks are only adding to the breast cancer problem. Alcohol has been linked to breast cancer in a number of studies, and the Canadian Cancer Society advises that even one drink a day on average can increase the risk of breast cancer.

Samantha King, an associate professor of physical and health education and women's studies at Queen's University, in Kingston, Ont., has also raised a stink about pink. In 2006, she wrote "Pink Ribbons Inc.," one of the first critical looks at how breast cancer has been co-opted by corporate ad men and women.

Every October, King says she sees plenty of examples of "pinkwashing," but this year, three questionable campaigns stand out for her.

One is the KFC Buckets for a Cure campaign in the U.S., in which 50 cents from every bucket of fried chicken is going to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

"KFC sells products that are salt- and fat-laden, and injected with hormones, and they are the subject of a lawsuit in California about a potential carcinogen that they use in the processing of their chicken," King tells CTV.ca.

Another is the annual campaign by Ultramar gas stations in Quebec, in which stations are plastered with big pink ribbons. King notes a number of studies have linked air pollution to breast cancer so encouraging people to buy more gas is not going to help.

But the most mind-boggling pink-ribbon tie-in she's seen is a handgun sold in the U.S. that features a bubblegum pink grip. Its manufacturer promises to donate a portion of proceeds to breast cancer awareness.

"So they're saving lives by taking lives?" asks a bewildered King.

Many have accused the pink ribbon campaign of promoting "slacktivism": the belief that going shopping or "clicking for a cure" will make difference. If people really wanted to contribute to cancer research, they would sit down to write a cheque to a charity or research facility, the argument goes.

But King says she understands why people choose to contribute through pink ribbon merchandising.

"People are really busy and pulled in different directions. And if you have to buy a product anyway and you have to choose between one with a pink ribbon and one without, it's an easy way to feel you are fulfilling your role as a good citizen," she says.

But she also wants to point out what many Canadians may not realize: that the money raised by pink ribbon campaigns and runs for the cure contribute only a fraction of the funds that go into cancer research.

"When you look at Canada as a whole, the federal government still provides the vast majority of funding for research, through the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation [which claims ownership of the ribbon as an official mark] provides only a small percentage," she says.

King says she believes most people contribute to pink ribbon campaigns with the best of intentions and says she's not seeking to criticize those intentions.

"I'm just trying to draw attention to its limitations. Where is the money really going? How much of it is going there? There are so many questions we need to ask."

Breast Cancer Action, the founder of the Think Before You Pink campaign, offers this list of questions to ask before you buy pink.

1. How much money from your purchase actually goes toward breast cancer?

Breast Cancer Action advises asking yourself: is the amount they're planning to send enough for you? If you can't tell how much money is being donated, or if you don't think it's enough, give directly to the organization instead.

2. What is the maximum amount that will be donated?

BCA notes that many companies place a cap on the amount of money that will be donated. In some cases, that cap be reached fairly quickly. If the cap has already been met, your purchase may not contribute anything to the cause.

3. How are the funds being raised?

Sometimes, a purchase alone is not enough. Some campaigns ask shoppers to visit a website to complete the contribution, or send in a receipt. Since many shoppers won't be willing to take those extra steps, the campaign may not have that much meaning.

4. To what breast cancer organization does the money go, and what types of programs does it support?

Does the product's package tell you where the money goes and what will be done with it? Breast Cancer Action is of the opinion that some branches of research already get plenty of financial support, while other areas like research into the causes of breast cancer go under-funded. Other charities fund breast cancer "awareness" and "promotion," but not research into a cure. Shoppers should let their wallets do the talking about where fundsshould go.

5. What is the company doing to assure that its products are not actually contributing to the breast cancer epidemic?

Among the "pinkwashers" that Breast Cancer Action warns about are car companies, some cosmetics and personal care products companies whose products contain chemicals linked to breast cancer, and a number of chemical companies

Pinkwashing: Breast Cancer, Big Pharma, Big Ideas and the Brave New Girl

Vijay Sarma | Black Krishna Blog | November 19, 2010

In Toronto: everything is going pink. There's the ubiquitous breast cancer marketing, of course, mostly focusing on detection rather than treatment or prevention. But, there's also a mirror-effect going on across the social and cultural landscape. Might they be related? Is this happening elsewhere? Are people starting to get used it? What is "it" anyway?

Social engineering goals of the elite super-rich families have been re-discovered and re-admitted for decades. Millions of people worldwide know about them, at least if the last 10 years of online view counts can be counted on. Since polls of a few hundred or thousand people can influence our opinions, the aforementioned fact should be acknowledged.

Based on what we know: they're Satanic eugenicists. That means beyond the land, wealth and power they've accumulated over the centuries, they also want to massively reduce the population of the planet. Most estimates suggest by 90%, or as the Georgia Guidestones suggest, to move from 6.8 billion people to around 500 million. They've already started.

Cancer research (note: "re" search) has been done for over 80 years. Billions of dollars have been poured into it. It's the most profitable charity in history. Yet, the Canadian Cancer Society now says 40% of men and 45% of women are expected to get it. They also say 1 in 4 Canadians will likely die from it. This sounds like something we should look into more.

NaturalNews.com is among the best websites on this. Just Google "natural news" and add "breast cancer" or "mammograms" or other search terms, or see their site for more details. Suffice it to say, a lot of research has been done on cancer. However, a lot of good stuff that contradicts the goals of the Big Pharma corporations to sell drugs is ignored.

Working with Big Banks, the drug companies have succeeded in buying themselves some more time from criticism by saying "We'll cure cancer in our lifetime!", which by casual colloquial estimates, I'd guess to be about 20 years in our current mind-state. They've also given themselves valuable PR worth far more than the few million in donations they make.

Back to eugenics: one of their goals was to use us to build them this 21st century technological wonderland, complete with higher sciencies and a massive and threatening military-industrial complex, which they use to control us. We made them fabulously wealthy. They grew fabulously decadent. And bored. So: they're now moving forward with depopulation.

Keep in mind that the entire population of the world of 6.8 billion people could fit in Australia living on about 12,000 square feet each, or the size of about 4 nice suburban houses worth of land. Of course, not all of the land would be useable, though more than people think with technology, but the bottom line globally is this: there is no "overpopulation problem."

Once that idea combined with "resource shortages" and "sustainability" is fully understood, we can see how the people in control of what most of us hear want us to expect a "normal" apocalyptic future and use less now so they can steal it. UN Agenda 21 is their plan for the system of "globalization" to create a "world government" for the people at the top to use.

Pinkwashing is just one way to combine several cultural memes, including our mass-engineered New Age social "Keep it happy!" pressure that's meant to prevent us from dealing effectively with any serious personal or political problems; female empowerment; adult infantilization and more. We like what we're used to; and we're getting used to seeing Pink.

While it seems like a daunting problem, it's not that bad. We can all easily see the trends in our cultures evidenced everywhere. Then, we can just help each other figure out how they push the bigger agenda and help each other resist them. Then, we can pressure our elected officials to deal with our most serious issues instead of just settling for what we're given.

Trends can be followed for practical reasons, like people trying to remain friends and businesses trying to remain in business. But, once we expose the dangerous ones, they won't be good graces or marketing anymore. We can reject our metaphorical "pink" contact lenses.to avoid accepting the next phase of depopulation, including a rapid increase in cancer.

Just look around and see if you can notice big ideas being mysteriously pushed or accepted by all quarters, including men and women, the corporate and indie media, education and foundation funded activists, the political "left" and "right" and more. That's the work of the "shadow government" minions pushing big agendas right beside people who have no clue.

Most people still don't know enough about this agenda to resist it, through no fault of their own. However, it's not hard to tell people today as long as we're polite, brief and trying to help them, so it's a non-issue and can be done easily with 21st century technology. Then, it's simply up to people wherever they live to priotize better policies instead of Pinkwashing.

This episode: why is pedophilia now sold to parents and everyone else? Is "barely legal" really "almost illegal"? Why did author Alduous Huxley say in 1962 that people will learn to "love their servitude" in and warn of centuries of false flag terror by oligarchs (always) in charge? Why did he die in 1963? Why are the Yanks rebelling against ridiculous airport security? What's a Al-Qaeda? Can we diss(miss) our cognitive dissonance? How can we control the people who control the people with guns?

FordWatch: TEA for WHO? vs. NWO / NGO's vs. Council Report Cardsharks vs. Canadian Crapocrypha vs. Feel Good At All Costs?

.

.

Ed note: I caught this Toronto Starticle about Mayor Ford opposing the commie greeniacs, at least in principle, according to the commie greeniacs, who really have their 'ish together, at least in practice. The current issue is light-rail service vs. subways for different reasons, but we'll forget it by tomorrow. What's more interesting is their "Council Voting Records - Report Card 2010" courtesy of TEA, the Toronto Environmental Alliance, whose oft-quoted executive director, Franz Hartmann, is on my personal sh-t list. They're fanatic global warming holocaust promoters and they're deliberately ignoring all of the real "environmental" or "green" issues causing half of us to get cancer and more evil stuff. But, you've gotta hand it to these NGO/NWO types. They've really got their shiznit together when it comes to organizing themselves and their info.

What's amazing is how sad it is that so many other people don't think ... (...) ... that they or we can do anything. I've heard people say "The problem is we're not organized!" So, I've responded with "Google: How To Organize" to find effective models for human beings. There's nothing that human beings can do that other human beings can't do. Like get organized. Heck, children organize bake-sales, proms, school plays and more, so how come adults can't organize to deal with the people killing a quarter of Canadians with cancer? It boggles. Anyway, another issue that will make this obscenely hard to read is the fact that we want to "feel good" as much and often as possible without actually doing anything good. This is getting in the way of our ability to think of doing anything but feeling good as soon as possible. Or possibly masturbating.

Not-so incidentally, right now, I'm listening to 2Pac's "Ambitions As A Rider" song from his "All Eyez On Me" album, the first song he recorded after heading straight to the studio after being released from prison after 11 months on bail for touching a girl's butt, or that's all they could convict him for because there was no evidence for anything and the cops (etc.) refused to look for and interview any other witnesses and suspects. What's unusual is I've been listening to it for 4 hours in a row on repeat. Why? Well, I'm a hapless (but not helpless) victim of Communist Canada social constipation and brainwashing too. So, if I choose to slack around, I can be web-deep in NBA scores, hip hoprypha, random cute girls or anything else. However, I felt like analyzing a few things from a fairly ambitious perspective, so I'm making sure that I can as best I can.

What's definitely possible is more people (guys?) finding ways to maintain an intensity of thought about serious subjects that helps them feel they can handle them. I find this method works with a variety of songs, which I find work better than whole albums since there's no emotional up and down swings taking you with them. I really like Eminem's "Recovery", but for "work" or "survival" purposes, I'd rather listen to "Ridaz" or "Won't Back Down" or even "Love The Way You Lie" on repeat than to hear the album take me on too-many twists and turns. I vary my steez, but I find this steez helps to keep my from varying my mood when I don't want to. I'm cool and can snap out of it anytime, but I can also snap into it anytime, so it works for me. That's the power of music if we use it, otherwise it's usually just another shot of escapist heroin into the vain.

Like the Manhattan Project, different sections of planning to take our City back in 2011, before it's stolen in 2012, need to be accurately compartmentalized before they're synthesized, if at all, it depends. Of course, if it's more than 140 characters, then we don't want to read it, which means "explaining" anything is nigh-impossible, while even "saying" anything gets that much tougher. But, before the Twitterverse eliminates paragraphs, sentences, vowels and words and turns us all into bird-brains who can barely chirp goofy pics to post, the break-down of how we can break out of this should be attempted. Without any metrics to judge the system, info about the NWO becomes predictive programming. Or, we get used to the eugenics plans to murder us and just accept them. That might be why so much info is allowed. So, we should try to keep score too....

USA 1 - Canada 0: Infowars’ TSA Abuse Story Number 1 Worldwide vs. 1 in 4 Canadians Will Die of Cancer? Hunh?

Ed note: I'd like to congratulate Alex Jones and the Infowars.com team for their brilliant and tireless work, plus the hundreds and even thousands of Americans refusing to put up with being abused at airports by cancer-causing naked body scanners and pervert-policies to feel them up, especially before the busy Christmas season when many people need to fly to see family. Now, it seems like many Americans aren't as stupid as many Canadians believe they are, or as I often say, most Americans aren't stupid, it's the ones they put on TV for us to laugh at who are. Since we often do, that makes us... what? Speaking of that, the Canadian Cancer Society says 40 - 45% of Canadians (let's just say 50%, shall we?) will likely get cancer, plus 1 in 4 Canadians will die from it, perhaps it's finally time for us to take the issue of a bunch of psychopathic eugenicists running our country into the ground behind the scenes more seriously than ignoring it, or learning about it and sombrely shaking our heads in disapproval, or storing info like a squirell storing nuts for the winter while going nuts doing so. Of course, we have a cheap out from this reality if we want one, namely the the Canadian Cancer Society might be padding their cancer-stats to jack up donations. However, the page is fairly hidden, plus with what we already know, it doesn't matter. Between the cellphones, microwaves, laptops, plastics, fluorides, aspartames, chemtrails and much more, we should really raise a bit of a stink about this.

Most boxers don't like just taking shots to the head.

After a while, you can suffer from brain-damage.

Perhaps we should throw a few punches too.

Infowars’ TSA Abuse Story Number 1 Worldwide

Controversy over TSA reaching into fliers’ pants dominates web traffic, Infowars top linked

Aaron Dykes
Infowars.com
November 16, 2010

Following a top headline on the Drudge Report, the world’s single largest alternative media outlet, the shocking news story “TSA Now Putting Hands Down Fliers’ Pants“ by Paul Joseph Watson & Alex Jones has gone completely viral, organically reaching #1 on Alexa.com’s “Hot Pages.” Alexa is one of the leading and most trusted indicators of web traffic numbers, and an assurance that this disgusting over-reach of government power will be discussed by millions across the globe.

The controversy over TSA reaching into fliers’ pants is the latest development in an on-going backlash against the invasive measures by TSA. Radio host Owen JJ Stone, known as “OhDoctah,” appeared on the Alex Jones Show today to share his unnerving experience at an airport checkpoint. As Watson & Jones write, Stone was subjected to what other passengers also now face– TSA agents “literally putting their hands down people’s pants if they are wearing baggy clothing.”

Thanks again to our readers and supporters, as well as Drudge, for another big success in the Infowar. This is an important issue, and has currently reached the mainstream for discussion and debate.

Predictive Programming of Mind Control by Media

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QK2Yoz8M8uw

Predictive Programming in Movies

Predictive programming is a subtle form of psychological conditioning provided by the media to acquaint the public with planned societal changes to be implemented by our leaders. If and when these changes are put through, the public will already be familiarized with them and will accept them as 'natural progressions', as Alan Watt calls it; thus lessening any possible public resistance and commotion.

"Minority Report" Eye Scanners Will Soon Monitor the Modern World

Sam Cook | Tested.com | August 19, 2010

When people say they want the technology used in Minority Report, they’re referring more to the gesture-based control schemes, and less to the eye scanners that constantly ID’d the characters in public. ... Global Rainmakers Inc. has announced that it will soon fill Leon, one of the largest cities in Mexico, with iris scanning technology.

America’s Bread And Circus Society

Chuck Baldwin | ChuckBaldwin.com | November 12, 2010

The Roman poet Juvenal (circa 100 A.D.) wrote regarding the way latter-day Roman emperors retained power and control over the masses that were seemingly more than happy to obsess themselves with trivialities and self-indulgences while their once-great-and-powerful empire collapsed before their very eyes.
